Job vacancies for Executive Directors of the IMI and Clean Sky Joint Undertakings

On the 20th June 2008, the European Commission published in the Official Journal publications of job vacancies in order to fill the position of Executive Director of both the IMI JU (The Innovative Medicines Initiative Joint Undertaking) and the Clean Sky JU (The Clean Sky Joint Undertaking).

The IMI JU will implement a Joint Technology Initiative aiming to establish Europe (Member States and countries associated to the Seventh EC Research Framework Programme) as the most attractive place for biopharmaceutical research and  development. The objective of the IMI JU is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the drug development process with the long-term aim that the pharmaceutical sector produces more effective and safer innovative medicines.

The Clean Sky JU is an objective-driven initiative targeting the environmental impact of the Air Transport System by reducing CO2 and NOx emissions, noise and fuel consumption. It will deliver full scale ground and in-flight demonstrators across the main flying segments and subsystems for fast and effective introduction of new technology in the new generation of aircrafts.

The Executive Director of IMI and Clean Sky is the legal representative and public face of the IMI Joint Undertaking. He/she shall perform his/her tasks with independence and shall be accountable to the Governing Board. The Executive Director will lead and manage the Joint Undertaking and take overall responsibility for its operations ensuring the achievement of the Joint Undertaking's objectives. As such, he/she will play a key role for the implementation of the IMI Joint Technology Initiative.

Applicants must

Candidates will be considered for the selection phase on the basis of the following formal criteria to be fulfilled by the deadline for applications:

  • Nationality: Be a national of a Member State of the European Union, or of a country associated to the Seventh Research Framework Programme.
  • University degree or diploma: Have a level of education corresponding to a full university education, as evidenced by a diploma, where the normal duration of the studies in question is four years or more, in a field related to the duties.
  • Professional experience: Have at least 15 years' postgraduate experience at a level to which the qualifications referred to above give admission, of which five years must have been acquired in the domain of the Joint Undertaking activities;
  • Management experience: Have at least five years of the professional experience gained in a high level management function.
  • Languages: A thorough knowledge of one of the official Community languages and a satisfactory knowledge of a second of these languages to the extent necessary for the performance of his/her duties.
  • Age limit: be able to complete the full three-year mandate before reaching retirement age. For temporary staff of the European Communities, retirement age is defined as being the end of the month in which the person reaches the age of 65.

The Executive Director will be appointed by the Governing Board of the IMI JU as a temporary agent at grade AD14 for a period of three years. After an evaluation of the Executive Director's performance, the Board may extend the term of office once for a further period of not more than four years.
