European Atlas of the Seas becomes a reality

The DG for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries manages the first online European Atlas of the Seas, a tool that puts at all the European citizens' disposal updated and detailed information on different issues related to european maritime spaces.

In the Atlas users can find reliable data on topics such as the European fishing fleet, motorways of the seas, the relief of the ocean floor, coastal erosion, maritime transport It is regularly being updated as new data becomes available.

The European Atlas of the Seas is for anyone interested in the maritime world and our common maritime heritage. It was developed to raise awareness of Europe's oceans and seas, in the context of the EU's integrated maritime policy. The atlas offers a remarkably diverse range of information about Europe's seas including:

  • Sea depth and underwater features
  • Tide amplitude and coastal erosion
  • Maritime policies and initiatives
  • Fishing quotas per species and per zone
  • European fishing fleet
  • Coastal activities
  • Maritime transport and ports statistics
  • Outermost regions


The Atlas, which exists in English, French and German, is a project developed by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, which manages two policy areas: the integrated maritime policy  and the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). This DG calls the users of the Atlas to share their impressions with them, using their online questionnaire .
