Commission issues a proposal on preparedness and prevention for disasters

The European Commission, Directorate-General for Environment, Civil Protection Unit, has launched a call for proposals with the aim of identifying projects on preparedness and prevention which might be eligible for financial support in the framework of the Council decision establishing a Civil Protection Financial Instrument.

The Civil Protection Financial Instrument aims to support and complement the efforts of the Member States for the protection, primarily of people but also of the environment and property, including cultural heritage, in the event of natural and man-made disasters, acts of terrorism and technological, radiological or environmental accidents and to facilitate reinforced cooperation between the Member States in the field of civil protection.

The indicative total budget for the Call for Proposals  to support projects on preparedness and prevention of the Community Civil Protection Mechanism, will be up to 3,050,000€. Deadline for submitting proposals ends on March 31st, 2010.

The aim of preparedness projects is to improve the effectiveness of emergency response by enhancing the preparedness and awareness of civil protection professionals and volunteers, to support and complement the efforts of the Participating States for the protection of citizens, environment and property in the event of natural and man-made disasters and to facilitate reinforced cooperation between the Participating States in the field of preparedness in civil protection and marine pollution.

As for the prevention projects, they aim to support and complement the efforts of Participating States on prevention, focusing on areas where a common European approach is more effective than separate national approaches.
