The Council formally ratifies Barroso as president of the Commission

The Official Journal of the European Union has published the decision to renew the Portuguese on his office until 2014. European Parliament has yet to give its approval to this decision.

Jose Manuel Durao Barroso will remain being chairman of the executive body of the European Union until October 31st, 2014. The beginning of his second term as head of the College of European Commissioners will be November 1st of this year.

The Official Journal of the European Union reflects the Council's decision, which had already bet for the continuity of Barroso, the only candidate for the position, in its last meeting on 18 and 19 June 2009. Barroso has been the chairman of the Commission since November 2004 when he left the presidency of Portugal to replace Romano Prodi as head of the Commission.
