Comission launches 2009 Call for proposals for nanoelectronics projects

The European Commission has published in the Official Journal of the European Union on March 19th 2009, notice of the launch of 2009 Call for proposals under the work programme of the ENIAC Joint Undertaking. Interested applicants must present their Project Outlines by May 6th 2009, and Full Project Proposals will have reach ENIAC before September 3rd 2009.

ENIAC research projects are industry-driven projects in the field of nanoelectronics, which aim at generating new and improved technologies and in applying them in products, processes or services; in order to strengthen the competitiveness of European industry, improve sustainability, and facilitate the emergence of new markets and applications that respond to societal needs.

The Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) ENIAC on nanoelectronics, aims at developing European potential on nanolectronics offering new features and services in a series of sectors such as ICTs, transportation, consumer goods, manufacturing, health services or energy. This Call falls within the ICT theme of specific programme Cooperation of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7)

Europe enjoys a strong position to make the transition from Microelectronics to Nanoelectronics. However, there are research challenges and infrastructure investments required which are high, and Europe’s global competitors in the USA and Asia Pacific are already establishing dedicated nanoelectronics research networks.

A key purpose of the ENIAC European Technology Platform (ETP) therefore is to draw up and implement the ENIAC Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) to achieve its Vision 2020 of the nanoelectronics sector.

Following this objective, the European Commission has launched ENIAC Call for Proposals 2009, ENIAC-2009-1, supporting industry-driven projects in the field of nanoelectronics, aiming at generating new and better technologies, as well as their application in products, processes and services.

The ENIAC Joint Undertaking budget for this call is 37.053.500 €, alongside up to 66,87 M€ from ENIAC member states, taking into account that total public funds awarded by the ENIAC Joint Undertaking to projects arising from this call, following the evaluation and selection of proposals, may differ from the total budget of the call.

A JU financial contribution may be given to any legal entity established in any EU Member State or FP7 Associated country (including the European Commission's Joint Research Centre). The financial contribution of the ENIAC member States will be a certain percentage of eligible costs incurred by a participant to implement a project, which may vary according to the type of participant and the type of R&D activity as specified by each member State.

The evaluation and selection of proposals will consist of a two-steps process. At the first step, the consortium will submit a Project Outline (PO), with an outline of the main information on the project proposed. At the second step, a Full Project Proposal (FPP) will be required, where the project proposal will be described in detail, giving all the information needed for the evaluation. Interested applicants must submit their PO by May 6th 2009, and FFP will have to reach ENIAC at the latest on September 3rd 2009.

Proposals, both PO and FPP, must be submitted electronically, using the ENIAC ProposalService (EPS).
