The European Parliament adopted a resolution that suggests that European political parties should propose candidates for Commission President at the next European elections. The resolution also recommends that each European alliance of political parties should propose a candidate to run for European Commission President and lead their 2014 European election campaign.

A resolution adopted by the European Parliament proposes that European political parties should propose candidates for Commission President at the next European elections. According to the MEPs, with this decision would be boosted the profile of the elections and offer an added incentive for citizens to participate. The latest European Elections were held in 2009.

With regard to the European Parliament's next elections that are foreseen to be held in June 2014, MEPs recommend holding the next European elections in May rather than June, as for previous ballots. MEPs propose polling days on 15-18 May or 22-25 May 2014 to give the new Parliament time to prepare the election of the Commission President in July. The resolution also suggests that member states to modify their electoral law to introduce "appropriate and proportionate" minimum thresholds for the allocation of seats so to ensure that the House can work smoothly, as well as duly reflecting the citizens’ choice.

The European Commission proposed a draft law aimed to simplify the procedure for non-national EU citizens to stand as candidates for the European Parliament by amending the existing rules (Directive 93/109/EC). It is one the Commission’s initiatives to promote and facilitate participation in the European elections. Following agreement by the European Parliament, the proposal is now expected to be adopted by the Council before the end of 2012.
