Graphene and Human Brain Projects are the winners of the European largest research excellence award

The European Commission announced the two winners of a competition of Future and Emerging Technologies (FET), which will receive one billion euros each, to deliver 10 years of world-beating science at the crossroads of science and technology. "Graphene" will investigate and exploit the unique properties of a revolutionary carbon-based material. The "Human Brain Project" will create the world's largest experimental facility for developing the most detailed model of the brain.

The Commission seeks expert advisors for Horizon 2020

The European Commission presented a call asking experts from all fields to participate in shaping the agenda of Horizon 2020, the European Union's future funding programme for research and innovation. The groups will encourage dialogue between all levels of government, civil society and business from all EU Member States, and influence the direction of EU research and innovation funding from now until 2020.

€680 million in EU funding awarded to 302 top researchers

The 'Advanced Grants' from the European Research Council (ERC) were awarded in this occasion to 302 senior research leaders in 24 different countries across Europe. The European funding will allow these scientists to pursue their most ground-breaking ideas at the frontiers of knowledge together with their own teams.

The highest proportions of enterprises with innovation activity were recorded in Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium

A report published by Eurostat shows that 53% of enterprises from industry and services reported innovation activity between 2008 and 2010. However there are important difference among Member States. The highest proportions of enterprises with innovation activity were recorded in Germany,Luxembourg, Belgium, while the lowest were recorded in Bulgaria, Poland, Latvia, Romania and Hungary.
