European researchers published new data on how the body's proteins can fight the HIV

A team of British researchers discovered that the SAMHD1 protein prevents the virus from replicating itself within these cells, paving the way for development of drugs that imitate this biological process to ensure that HIV cannot replicate in the sentinel cells of the immune system.

SMEs will have a new EU instrument to get loans for research and innovation easier

The European Commission and the European Investment Bank Group launched a new guarantee facility for innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to help them access finance from banks. The new scheme, the so-called SME risk-sharing instrument (RSI), will be managed by the European Investment Fund (EIF).

Proposal for the new EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 unveiled

The European Commission has put forward its proposal for the new European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 that will run over the period 2014-2020. The programme, which proposes a series of initiatives to boost investment in research and innovation, will represent an investment of 80 billion Euro. Facilitating access to finance, encouraging the participation of SMEs and reducing administrative burdens are some of the objectives set by Commission's proposal.
