Presidency calls for an informal European Council

To coordinate EU’s position in view of the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh, Swedish Prime Minister and European Council President Fredrik Reinfeldt today called for an extra informal European Council meeting to take place in Brussels on Thursday the 17th of September.

At the G20 Summit, many substantial topics will be addressed, including the overall economic situation, compensation and bonuses in the financial sector and how to strengthen supervision and regulation of the financial markets. The summit will also address the issue of resources and governance of IMF, job creation, energy efficiency and trade/Doha-negotiations and increased support to Low Income Countries.

On the initiative of President Obama the G20 Summit will also discuss climate financing. Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt has welcomed he initiative: "I hope the Pittsburgh Summit will inject political energy into the international climate negotiations. Overall, the G20 Pittsburg Summit will give us an important opportunity to discuss and coordinate among G20 continued responses to the economic and financial crisis – and to the important issue of climate financing".

Because of the importance of the issues that will be addressed in G-20 summit, the Swedish prime minister has previously proposed to hold an informal meeting to prepare these items. This meeting will take place in Brussels on 17 September.

"All these questions and proposals needs to be discussed among EU’s Heads of State and Government before Pittsburgh, so that the EU can have a common and strong position at the G20 Summit and speak with one voice. The world needs leadership in situations such as these", said Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt at a press briefing.
