The Commission called on member states for more cooperation to complete the internal energy market

The European Commission called on member states in a Communication to step up their efforts to transpose and implement the existing EU internal energy market rules. Furthermore, the European institution announced that it will work with Member States to empower consumers and to reduce state interventions which distort markets.

The new Communication published by the European Commission on how to make the internal energy market work, calls on member states to step up their efforts to transpose and implement the existing EU internal energy market rules. The Commission foresees several actions to complete the EU internal energy market by 2014, such as implementing internal market law and enforcing competition rules, empowering consumers, and ensuring flexible market design. On the other hand, the Commission called for a more coordinated European approach to increase renewable energy trading in June 2012.

The Commission also stressed that while progress has already been made in terms of offering more choice for consumers, keeping wholesale energy prices in check and securing sufficient supplies at all times, more needs to be done to exploit the full potential of a truly integrated European market.

In addition to the above mentioned measures, the Commission will propose guidelines on support schemes for renewables that will enhance the effectiveness of the internal market. In February 2011 the EU Heads of State declared the need to complete the internal energy market by 2014.
