Commission adopts up to €112 million funding through action programme 2012 for Morocco

The European Commission has adopted the action programme 2012 for Morocco which will include actions aimed at improving policies for forests management and protection as well as actions to support economic reform and institutional capacity building. In addition to the €112 million adopted within the action program 2012 for Morocco, the Commission has also allocated a €80 million additional envelope within the SPRING programme.

According to European Commissioner for enlargement Štefan Fule, this program perfectly reflects the priorities of the partnership between the European Union and Morocco signed within the scope of the new neighborhood policy. The objectives set by the programme are twofold and include actions to facilitate better access for Moroccan citizens to public institutions as well as the promotion of a more sustainable exploitation of natural resources.

The forest policy Support program, with an amount of €37 million, will provide further support to the efforts already undergone by the Moroccan government in order to fight against the degradation of forest resources and to improve living conditions for the population of these vulnerable ecosystems. The program will help to improve the conservation and development of current forest heritage and to increase public participation in decisions concerning their management.

Moreover, the governance program called "Hakama" will continue the efforts put in place to improve efficiency and transparency for resources mobilisation and public expenditure. This program, with a budget of €75 million, will also provide general support to improve the quality of public services.

Along with these €112 million, the Commission has also approved an additional €80 million envelope for Morocco through the SPRING (Support for Partnership, Reform and Inclusive Growth) Programme. This additional funding allocated to Morocco has been approved as a result of the reforms initiated by the Moroccan government within the SPRING program, which is especially focused in promoting political and democratic support in the Southern Neighbourhood.
