Construction in the Euro area drops by 1.8% in June
According to the data released by Eurostat referred to June 2011, seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector fell by -1.8% in the Euro area compared to the previous month. Figures for the same month in the European Union as a whole show a slight less decrease of -1.3%.
Although figures in construction sector showed some positive results by the beginning of year 2011, in annual terms construction output fell by -11.3% in the Euro area and by -8.1% in the EU27 in June 2011, when comparing data with June 2010. Annual variations show that for Member states whose data are available for June 2011, construction output fell in ten and rose in four. The largest decreases were registered in Spain (-43.7%), Slovenia (-35.9%), Hungary (-13.9%) and Romania (-10.0%), and the increases in Poland (+16.2%), Sweden (+4.5%), Germany (+2.6%) and the Netherlands (+2.3%).
However, although Germany annual figures show a positive evolution in construction sector, these same data in terms of monthly adjusted evolution show one of the most important drops, decreasing by -4.5%. The rest of largest decreases were registered in Slovenia (-11.9%) and Hungary (-5.5%), and the highest increases in the United Kingdom (+3.8%), Slovakia (+2.0%) and Portugal (+1.7%).
According to the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), in terms of sectoral breakdown, figures show that building construction decreased by -1.0% in the Euro area and by -1.4% in the EU27, after an increase of +0.3% in both zones in May. Civil engineering fell by -2.7% in the Euro area and by -0.8% in the EU27, after -1.1% and 0.0% respectively in the previous month.
