Eurozone and EU industrial production down in June 2011

According to the data released by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat) seasonally adjusted industrial production in June 2011 fell by 0.7% in the Euro area and by 1.2% in the whole EU compared with May 2011. However, in annual terms industrial production increased in both areas, by 2.9% and 1.7% respectively.

Among the thirteen Member States where industrial production rose the highest increases were registered in Estonia (+23.7%), Latvia (+15.2%), Lithuania (+10.3%), the Czech Republic (+7.4%) and Germany (+7.0%). On the contrary, most important decreases were in Greece (-13.2%), the United Kingdom (-5.3%) and Denmark (-3.3%) between the eight countries with available data where industrial production declined.

According to the last data released by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), production of durable consumer goods in June 2011 fell by 2.5% in the Euro area and by 2.2% in the European Union as a whole, compared with data registered in the previous month. Capital goods production decreased at a smaller level in the Eurozone (1.5%) but reduction was stronger when looking at the EU 27 (2.9%).

Intermediate goods declined by 0.6% in the Euro area and by 1.3% in the EU27 and non-durable consumer goods dropped by 0.5% and 0.8% respectively. Production of energy fell by 0.4% in the Euro area, but gained 0.8% in the EU27.

In annual terms, production of capital goods in June 2011 grew by 7.0% in the Euro area and by 5.0% in the EU27, compared to June 2010. Intermediate goods increased by 3.3% and 2.3% respectively. Non-durable consumer goods rose by 1.2% in the Euro-area and by 0.5% in the EU27. Durable consumer goods fell by 2.7% and 4.1% respectively. Production of energy decreased by 5.1% in the euro area and by 4.6% in the EU27.
