The Internal Market Committee voted on better rules to protect consumers
On 16 June, the Internal Market Committee voted in a deal with the Council and the Commission on rules to protect consumers better and ensure clear common conditions for firms competing in the single market.
The responsible for the report approved, the MEP Andreas Schwab highlighted that with this deal on the Consumer Rights Directive consumers and businesses will equally win. There will be more safety for consumers shopping on line and common rules for businesses. The positive vote was foreseen after the deal already agreed by the Council and the Commission and presented on 7 June.
The new legislation still needs to be formally approved by the Council of Ministers, and will have to be implemented by Member States within two years. The compromise text was endorsed by COREPER (committee of Member States' representatives), in a letter dated 15 June.
