The Belgian EU Presidency Bets on Biodiversity

The Belgian EU presidency has intended to promote biodiversity through a series of acts and activities within the context of the UE.

This year is the International Year of Biodiversity. The EU has organised several events centred on this topic for the public awareness. Fror instance, the European Green Week, which was focused on biodiversity, or the high-level European conference on the "Post-2010 Biodiversity Vision and Target".

This is the reason why the VRT, the Flemish Region (LNE or department of Environment, Nature and Energy), the Brussels Capital Region (Leefmilieu Brussel or Environment Brussels) and the federal government (DG Environment of the Federal Public Health Service) will be airing a series of radio programmes in the context of the Belgian EU presidency on the topic of "biodiversity here at home".

During the summer months, every morning in the radio at 6:50 AM there is a program titled "Chris saves the planet". Also, every Friday morning at 7:15 AM will offer tips for activities.

Besides, on TV, in late October, it will be presented a two-part documentary on biodiversity. Also, the RTBF, a French speaking channel, has developed a game show on sustainable development, the first broadcast of which in November will be specifically devoted to the environment and biodiversity.

This will be a new attempt of the Belgian presidency to raise awareness on biodiversity loss, that according to the Eurobarometer survey made in April only 17% of respondents agreed that they were already touched by it.
