Call for proposals - Project on Maritime Spatial Planning in the Atlantic, including Celtic Sea and Bay of Biscay MARE/2012/08 Closed!

The Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) is an instrument essential for resource efficiency in maritime activities. The objective of the project is to gather practical knowledge and experience in the implementation of Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) in one or more cross-border sea areas situated within the Atlantic, including Celtic Sea and Bay of Biscay, providing added value to the co-operation activities that are already going on in this area. This project therefore seeks to stimulate the development of a cross-border, ecosystem-based approach towards MSP in the Atlantic.

  • Carry out concrete, cross-border MSP in cooperation among European countries in accordance with the 10 key principles identified in the 2008 Roadmap Communication, in one or more cross-order sea areas, to be identified by the project Partners and characterised by multiple and cross-order maritime uses (existing or potential), situated within the Atlantic, including Celtic Sea and Bay of Biscay, with the greatest possible involvement of relevant authorities responsible for MSP in the selected area(s);
  • Identify potential barriers and formulate recommendations on the application of MSP in cross-border areas, to the benefit of cross-border MSP application throughout the EU;
  • Explore the links between MSP and ICZM and contribute to a better understanding of similarities and differences between the two concepts.
