European Parliament opens application period for 2011 Journalism Prize

The Eurochamber opens on 15 January the period for all interested professionals to submit their works for the European Parliament Journalism Prize 2011. This Prize aims to give puiblic recognition to journalists who have covered major issues at European level or promoted better understanding of EU institutions or policies.

The period to submit applications to the European Parliament Journalism Prize 2011 starts on 15 January 2011, and will be open until 31 March. As in past years, the forth edition of the Prize will be open to four different categories for the prize: written press, radio, TV and Internet, the winner in each section receiving 5,000 euro.

Candidates can present their articles or reports either individually or in teams of up to five people. All contributions must have been published or broadcast between 1 April 2010 and 31 March 2011 in one of the official languages of the European Union. Also, all entrants must be registered journalists who are nationals or residents of an EU Member State.

The selection procedure runs in two phases: first, juries will be set up to select winners in each category in every EU Member State; in a second phase, a final jury, led by a European Parliament Vice-President, will then select the four EU-wide winners, who will receive their prizes at a presentation ceremony in October 2011.

In October 2010, the European Parliament awarded the third Journalism Prize, which went to Witold Szablowski from the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza in the category of written press, Kajsa Norell and Nuri Kino from Sveriges Radio Ekot (Sweden) in radio, Zsolt Németh from MTV Hungary in the TV category and Brittish Clive James-Matthews on the category of Interner with his blog EUtopia.
