Between October 2012 and March 2013, euro area SMEs reported a deterioration in the availability of bank loans

The report on the results of the “Survey on the access to finance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the euro area” shows an increase in external financing needs for bank loans from SMEs in the EU between October 2012 and March 2013. SMEs also reported a deterioration in the availability of bank loans.

MEPs want to start negotiations with US in public procurement and financial services

The International Trade Committee approved a resolution that calls on the Council to authorize the start of Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) talks with the US in June. MEPs highlighted that the negotiating mandate should include public procurement and financial services, but exclude culture.

New EU rules could enable firms save billions of euros if they re-use public data instead of producing them from scratch

MEPs at the Industry Committee approved draft EU rules that will enable companies or persons to get access to data such as maps, statistics, weather data, infrastructure listings, data from publicly funded research projects, and digitised books from libraries, which they can then use to develop their businesses. According to MEPs, EU firms could save billions of euros thanks to these draft EU rules that would enable them to re-use public data instead of producing them from scratch

European Web Entrepreneurs of the 2013 Year are SoundCloud and SwiftKey

A report shows that innovation and small business are receiving a huge boost from cohesion policy investments

The European Commission published a report in which shows an overview of how EU Structural Funds are working in member states. According to this report, these funds have already led to progress and improvement for many citizens, such as that 1.9 million more people now have broadband access; or 2.6 million more people are served by water supply, 5.7 million more by waste water projects.

A Parliament's resolution argues that the ECB should do more to promote growth and jobs

MEPs adopted in plenary session a resolution that stresses that the European Central Bank should do more to ensure that its cheap loans to banks were being passed on to the real economy and the ECB itself must become more transparent and accountable in line with its growing role in the Eurozone crisis.

MEPs approved to cap banker's bonuses to curb speculative risk-taking

The European Parliament adopted in plenary session a banking reform package that should spur growth, by making it easier for banks to lend to small firms that drive the real economy. This reform includes measures such as capping banker's bonuses to curb speculative risk-taking, stepping up capital provisions to help banks cope better with crises, and stiffen supervision.

Member states' representatives endorsed EU Open Data rules

The EU Council's 'Coreper' committee (EU Committee of Member States' Permanent Representatives) backed the EU Open Data rules as proposed by the European Commission. The revision of the 2003 Public Sector Information Directive would make all generally accessible (that is, non-personal) public sector information available for re-use.
