14 of the 27 EU Member States have not put the rules relating to cross-border crime in place

On July 2010, Italian authorities confiscated €60 million of Mafia assets. In the UK, £92.3 million was seized from an international crime ring with property in Dubai. The seizures only claim a fraction of the total wealth of criminals, which today can be easily transferred across borders.

The European Medicines Agency will release adverse reaction reports

The European Ombudsman has welcomed the announcement of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) accepting to release documents about adverse reactions related to a drug used to treat acne. This announcement follows the recommendations made in the framework of one of the Ombudsman's inquiry.

Enhanced cooperation to help international couples is in force

Member States are using the enhanced cooperation procedure to push forward with rules allowing international couples to select which country's law would apply to their divorce. The Regulation which applies this mechanism for the first time must now be approved by the participating 14 countries during an upcoming Council meeting before it can definitely enter into force.

Directive on self-employed workers enters into force

On 4 August 2010, Directive 2010/41/EU on self-employed workers and assisting spouses has definitely entered into force. This legal provision will grant self-employed workers and their partners better social protection, including the right to maternity leave for the first time. Member states will have two years to transpose these new provisions to their respective national legal systems.

EDPS calls for more legal certainty and a higher level of data protection for IMI

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) addressed on 27 July a letter to the Internal Market and Services Directorate General of the Commission, in which he took stock of what has been achieved and what further progress needs to be made on the issues raised in the Commission Report on the state of data protection in the Internal Market Information System (IMI).
