EC proposes new common security rules for management of nuclear waste

The European Commission has put forward on 3 November a proposal for Council Directive including safety standards for disposing spent fuel and radioactive waste from nuclear power plants as well as from medicine or research. With this Directive internationally agreed safety standards become legally binding and enforceable in the European Union.

Shaping Europe's Energy Strategy, EP calls for efficiency

MEPs meeting within the Energy Committee adopted a report putting forward Parliament's priorities for the European Energy Strategy 2011-2020. In this resport, the Committee urged the European Commission to fully exploit existing EU energy legislation and projects and put energy efficiency as a key priority of Europe's energy strategy for 2011-2020.

Commission congratulates Switzerland for the breakthrough in the east tube of the Gotthard base tunnel

Vice-President Siim Kallas, responsible for transport, congratulates Switzerland for making an outstanding effort to deliver its share on time. When completed, the Gotthard base tunnel will form part of a larger trans-Alpine rail system, which currently includes the Lötschberg base tunnel and, later, will be completed by the Brenner and the Mont Cenis base tunnels.

Europeans are becoming increasingly "digital" according to a European Commission Eurobarometer survey which questioned 27,000 households throughout the EU on their use of internet, telephones and TV. More Europeans are subscribing to broadband internet and digital television in fixed-cost bundled 'packages'.

One step closer towards new EU rules for investigation and prevention of air accidents

The European Parliament's vote supporting a new regulation on investigation and prevention of accidents in civil aviation which paves the way to a first reading agreement between Parliament and Council. The new legislation will strengthen the independence and effectiveness of air accident investigations in the EU, promote cooperation between the accident investigation authorities, and ensure better follow-up of safety recommendations.

Commission acts to deliver fast and ultra-fast broadband in Europe

The European Commission has presented three complementary measures adopted in order to facilitate the roll out and take up of fast and ultra-fast broadband in the Union. The package adopted comprises a Commission Recommendation on regulated access to Next Generation Access (NGA), a proposal for a Decision to establish a Radio Spectrum Policy Programme and a Broadband Communication outlining how best to encourage public and private investment in high and ultra-high speed networks.

Commission to simplify rail Directives and establish Single Rail Area

The European Commission adopted on 17 September a proposal to provide better rail services for passenger and freight users by increasing competition on the railway market, strengthening the power of national regulators and improving the framework for investment in rail.

EC consultation on revision of Regulation for the allocation of slots at EU airports

The European Commission opened early September a consultation to evaluate the current operation of the Regulation concerning common rules for the allocation of slots at Community airports and to collect information for an impact assessment. All interested parties may submit their contributions by 29 October, welcoming concerned citizens, organisations and public authorities points of view.
