€42 million of EU funding to help saving lives of mothers in Liberia

The European Commission announced a new €42 million programme which will contribute to halving maternal mortality rate to 375 per 100,000 live births from the current level of 770 per 100,000 (one of the highest in the world) in Liberia. This EU funding is part of the EU's €1 billion MDG initiative to foster global progress on the Millennium Development Goals before 2015.

€5 million from EU funds for a new civil protection programme in the Mediterranean region

A new civil protection programme in the Mediterranean region, building on the achievements of the successful Euro-Mediterranean Regional Programme for the Prevention, Preparedness and Response to natural and man-made disasters (PPRD) was launched by the European Commission. The new programme, that will start in the spring of 2013 and will run until 2016, will have a strong focus on prevention and preparation rather than on response to disasters.

The outcome of the new Eurobarometer survey unveils that most of Europeans believe that Europe should continue helping developing countries despite the economic crisis. However, only 44% would be prepared to personally spend more money on products that support development (such as fair-trade goods).

New partnership between the EU and IFAD to improve sustainable agriculture

The EU and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) signed a partnership to jointly address challenges in sustainable agriculture and food and nutrition security, in order to reduce poverty in rural communities in developing countries. An example of this partnership is the Support to Farmers Organisations in Africa Programme, co-financed by the EU and the IFAD.

New proposals to improve EU's support to countries in democratic transition

The European Commission Vice-President and High Representative of the Union for Foreign and Security Policy presented new proposals on improving the EU's support to countries undergoing major political, social and economic reforms, the so-called transition countries. Catherine Ashton highlighted that support needs to combine long-term strategies with tangible short-term achievements. The EU can make sure to secure quick wins in such areas as facilitating credible elections, supporting programmes for job creation and growth but also by strengthening peace and security.

The European Commission confirmed the provision of €4 million to ensure the continuation of emergency assistance to the people of Bangladesh affected by the monsoon floods and landslides which hit the south-eastern part of the country in June-July 2012. An EU plan would create volunteer opportunities in humanitarian operations for some 10,000 people from 2014-2020

The EU Aid Volunteers initiative presented by the European Commission would created create opportunities for some 10,000 people from 2014-2020 to volunteer worldwide in humanitarian operations. The European Commission presented this plan which includes developing European standards for managing volunteers in humanitarian projects, and a training programme to prepare volunteers for deployment.

The European Commission announced €50 million humanitarian additional funding in order to help people in Syria. The release of the funds will begin as soon as the European Parliament and the Council have approved the decision. This will bring the Commission's total contribution to €119 million.

€3 million in EU funds allocated to Haiti to help the country to recover from tropical storm Isaac

The European Commission approved a new funding decision worth €3 million in order to provide water purification kits, plastic sheeting, temporary shelters and other emergency equipment to Haiti. Special attention will be paid to the provision of clean water and adequate sanitation to avoid epidemics of cholera.
