EU will go on supporting security in Congo

Since 2 May 2005, the European Union (EU) has been conducting a mission to provide advice and assistance for security sector reform in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The current mission statement is set out in Joint Action 2007/406/CFSP and ends on 30 September 2009. With the new Council Joint Action, the support to Security Sector Reform will go on until September 30th 2010.

The European Commission proposes solutions to resettle refugees

Today the Commission launched a proposal to create a "Joint EU Resettlement Programme" in order to protect refugees through cooperation between Member States. The aim of this programme is to relocate refugees from the first place of asylum to a country where protection is ensured and where they can develop their lives. This is the most viable solution for those who are unable to return to their country of origin, which are Asia, Africa or the Middle East in most cases.

EU activates Civil Protection Mechanism to fight fire in Greece

Due to the extreme weather conditions and severe forest fires in Greece, the European Commission activated on August 22nd, the Community Mechanism for Civil Protection and requested assistance with aerial means. The most dangerous fires, which are threatening the capital Athens, are in North-East Attica.

European Commission allocates €9 million to reinforce food security in Zimbabwe

The European Commission has allocated €9 million to safeguard access to food for vulnerable people affected by the breakdown of essential services in Zimbabwe. In spite of EU efforts to help the developing world in 2005 more than one billion people in the world are living in poverty. Therefore, the "I fight against poverty" campaign wants to raise awareness among youngsters of the importance of volunteerism and the EU policies for development, and it contains, among other initiatives, a musical contest.

The European Union was the largest donor of development aid in 2008

With the publication of annual report 2009 on development aid and assistance implemented in 2008, the European Union has confirmed in 2008 its position as the world's largest donor of development aid, with nearly 60% of world aid. The Commission alone has committed 12 million euros, or more than one fifth of the overall European effort.

EC and UN partner agencies signed their first contribution agreements under the EU € 1 billion “Food Facility”

Director-General of EuropeAid Co-operation Office, Koos Richelle, signed, on behalf of the European Commission, on May 15th 2009, the first contribution agreements of the Food Facility with three UN implementing partners: FAO (€106M), UNRWA (€ 39.6M) and UNICEF (€8.2M). Similar contribution agreements with the World Food Programme (€38.7M), and UNOPS (€ 10M) are expected to be finalised shortly, to be followed by agreements with the World Bank, IFAD and UNDP.

Commission adopts overall plan and first implementation decision for €1 billion "Food Facility" for developing countries

The European Commission has adopted a € 314 million package of projects to support agriculture and improve the food security situation in 23 developing countries across the globe. This is the first financing decision in the framework of the € 1 billion Food Facility which was adopted at the end of last year as a response to the growing food security problems faced by many developing countries. The Commission also agreed to an overall plan for the use of the entire amount of the Facility, targeting 50 developing countries in total.

The EP calls for removing subsidies on water distribution

MEPs adopted a resolution on the occasion of the V World Water Forum to be held in Istanbul from 16 to March 22. MEPs call for the removal of global subsidies to the distribution of water, because they are leading to artificially low prices and to overexploitation of resources. Moreover, MEPs want the problem of water management and water resources to included in the agenda of the conference on climate change in Copenhagen.

EC allocates 247 M€ in humanitarian aid to vulnerable people in 12 African countries

The European Commission will provide nearly a quarter of a billion euro in humanitarian aid to vulnerable people in twelve African countries, with 8.5 additional M€ specifically allocated for ECHO Flight, a special humanitarian air service. All funds are channelled through the Commission's Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) under the direct responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.
