EC and UN partner agencies signed their first contribution agreements under the EU € 1 billion “Food Facility”

Director-General of EuropeAid Co-operation Office, Koos Richelle, signed, on behalf of the European Commission, on May 15th 2009, the first contribution agreements of the Food Facility with three UN implementing partners: FAO (€106M), UNRWA (€ 39.6M) and UNICEF (€8.2M). Similar contribution agreements with the World Food Programme (€38.7M), and UNOPS (€ 10M) are expected to be finalised shortly, to be followed by agreements with the World Bank, IFAD and UNDP.

EC renews its commitment to support Africa Infrastructure in times of crisis

The European Commission has signed a Joint Statement with the African Development Bank and World Bank where these institutions renew their commitment with developing countries. In their Statement, these three Institutions acknowledge that the crisis calls for more coordination of infrastructure development in Africa, outlining their shared concerns shared and highlighting the priority interventions required at this time.

EC sets consultation mechanisms on VIS

The European Commission has adopted Decisión (2009/377/EC) of May 5th 2009, published in the Official Journal of the European Union on May 12th 2009, adopting implementing measures for the consultation mechanism and the other procedures referredto in Article 16 of Regulation (EC) No 767/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning the Visa Information System (VIS) and the exchange of data between Member States on short-stay visas (VIS Regulation).

EC opens call for tenders in the framework of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership

Notice has been given on May 7th 2009, of the launch of a restricted call for tenders (ref.EuropeAid/128163/C/SER/Multi), aiming at the organisation of conferences, seminars and meetings in the framework of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, the Union for the Mediterranean and the European Neighbourhood Policy — Regional Cooperation South. Provisional agreement reached over beef dispute, US will not impose Carousel sanctions

The European Union and the Trade Department of the United States have reached on May 6th 2009, an understanding which allows a way forward in the long-running dispute over hormone-treated beef. According to the agreement the US would not impose new “Carousel” sanctions over a set of EU products, and would in return enjoy additional duty-free access to the EU market for the type of high quality beef traditionally exported by the U.S.

EC adopts the second implementation decision under EU "Food Facility" for Developing Countries

The European Commission has adopted a € 394 million package of projects to support agriculture and improve the food security situation in developing countries. This is the second financing decision in the framework of the € 1 billion Food Facility which was adopted at the end of last year as a response to the growing food security problems in many developing countries.

EU intensifies policy on support to reforms in neighbouring countries

In its annual Progress Reports, the European Commission takes stock of the concrete reform achievements made by countries within the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) in 2008 and identifies the areas where further efforts are needed. Individual country reports for each country with an ENP Action Plan and a sectoral report accompany the policy paper.

Commission adopts new programme to fight terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction

On the eve of the donors’ conference for Pakistan, the European Commission has adopted a new three year programme to fight terrorism, trafficking and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The 2009-2011 Indicative Programme for the Instrument for Stability includes the first global counter-terrorism measures developed by the Commission together with experts from EU Member States. Key priorities are Pakistan and Afghanistan as well as the Sahel region in Africa.

Madrid closed the third Plenary EuroLat

Three resolutions on water, trade and climate change, and the financial crisis have been adopted at the third plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly Euro (EuroLat) meeting in Madrid between 6 and April 8, in addition to endorsing the "Euro Charter for Peace and Security".
