Information from the European Union institutions and bodies was published on 30th May 2008 concerning Authorisation State Aid to various member states under Articles 87 and 88 of the EC Treaty. One Aid scheme authorised was the Bioheat Boiler and Combined Heat and Power Deployment Programme in Ireland.

€3.1 million to help redundant workers in Portugal and Malta

The European Commission, on the 29th May 2008, made payments totalling €3.1 million to the Portuguese and Maltese authorities from the European Globalisation adjustment Fund (EGF). This is made up of € 2.4 million to help 1,549 Portuguese auto workers get back into work as quickly as possible and a further €681,000 for 675 dismissed Maltese textile workers. The payments follow approval by the Budgetary Authority (the European Parliament and the Council) on 10 April 2008.

New Gateway Programme to assist European companies to develop their business in Japan and Korea

From 2 June 2008 the EU Gateway Programme provides professional mentoring and coaching to EU companies that want to do business in Japan and Korea and offers them the possibility to participate in one-week business events in these target markets. The new phase of this business cooperation programme builds upon the experience of the Gateway to Japan Campaign which has helped about 2.500 European companies to find business partners in Japan over the last 14 years.

Business Climate Indicator for the euro area picks up slightly in May

After a drop in April, the Business Climate Indicator (BCI) for the euro area picked up slightly in May. Nonetheless, the downward trend of the BCI and the deceleration in industrial production registered in March point to a weakening of industrial activity in the second quarter of 2008.

Economic sentiment decreases further in the EU and remains stable in the euro area in May

In May, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) decreased further by 1.3 points to 96.7 in the EU and remained unchanged in the euro area at 97.1. In both regions, the ESI stands below its long-term average. Economic sentiment indicator (s.a.)

Fight obesity earlier in life, says Environment Committee

Europe has almost 22 million overweight children, and a further 1.3 million will be overweight or obese by 2010, says the Environment Committee in a report, adopted on Tuesday, that calls for an earlier start to measures to prevent obesity. Remedies include clearer food labelling, better food in schools and kindergartens, restrictions on advertising unhealthy food to children, and VAT reductions for fruit and vegetables.

New EU study lifts lid on financial exclusion

Millions of Europeans face an increased risk of social exclusion through lack of access to basic financial services, according to a new study presented by the European Commission on the 28th May 2008. The results of the study will be discussed at a high level conference in Brussels on the 28th. The conference will bring together over 400 participants from all over Europe and the world from the financial sector, consumer groups, public authorities and NGOs to propose a series of potential policy responses. The initiative follows the Single Market Review of November 2007, where the Commission announced its intention to ensure that, by a certain date, nobody is denied access to a basic bank account.

Environment Committee takes tough line on airline emissions

The EP Environment Committee voted on Tuesday 27th May 2008, to reintroduce most of the Parliament's first-reading amendments (previously rejected by the Council) to a proposal to include airline traffic in the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The two institutions have been battling  to have thier proposals put forward this week.

State aid: Welsh Red Meat Technical Support Scheme

On the 28th May 2008, the European Commission published notification of state aid granted aimed at the Cattle, sheep and pig production business in United Kingdom. Specifically to Wales, the aid is entitled the Welsh Red Meat Technical Support (Producers) Scheme. The scheme started on the 1st April 2008 and will continue until 31st March 2014.

The Commission launches a campaign to promote energy efficient driving

The European Commission, together with Europia, one of the partners of the Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign, have launched today a number of actions to promote energy efficient driving habits among European car users. "To reach our ambitious targets of CO2 reduction and energy savings we have to make a big effort in all sectors. In certain cases this will require high tech solutions, but in others we just need to apply some common sense. This campaign provides a set of simple tips to reduce CO2 emissions and save money, simply by driving more intelligently.
