The 2013 EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture unveils the finalists

The European Commission announced the five finalists together with the Fundació Mies van der Rohe for the 2013 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award. In total, 335 works in the 37 European countries which participate in the EU Culture programme were nominated for the award.

Euro area unemployment rate was 11.7% in December 2012, stable compared with November

The latest estimates published by Eurostat showed that both the EU and the euro area unemployment rates remained stable in December 2012 compared with November. The lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Austria (4.3%), Germany and Luxembourg (both 5.3%) and the Netherlands (5.8%), and the highest in Greece (26.8% in October 2012) and Spain (26.1%).

New mandate for the European Union Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) closer

The member states' Permanent Representatives endorsed the compromise reached with the European Parliament negotiators, thus paving the way for the adoption of the draft regulation at first reading which establishes a new mandate for the European Union Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA).

The mediator underlined the need to clarify that copies made by end-users for private purposes do not cause any harm

António Vitorino, Mediator on private copying and reprography levies, presented its recommendations to the European Commission. He proposed to foster increased reliance on licences and contractual arrangements as the best way to ensure that right holders are properly remunerated for their creative efforts and investments; and he recommends measures aimed at reconciling disparate national levy systems within the Single Market.

The Commission will examine barriers to cross-border trade in insurance products

The European Commission seeks experts to examine legal obstacles to cross-border trade in insurance products caused by different contract laws in the EU’s Member States. Experts will take part in a group that will report at the end of 2013, after which the Commission will decide on any possible follow-up actions.
