Agriculture Committee urged the Commission and Member states to take coordinated action to save bees

The Agriculture Committee at the European Parliament called for EU-wide action to save bees. This demand is done having regard that an estimated 84% of plant species and 76% of food production in Europe depend on pollination by bees. MEPs ask to step up investment in research and increasing funding for apiculture programmes after 2013.

New covered bond purchase programme launched by the European Central Bank

The European Central Bank (ECB) has decided to launch a new purchase programme which consists in purchases for an intended amount of €40 billion and in purchases that will have the capacity to be conducted in the primary and secondary markets and will be carried out by means of direct purchases. On the other hand, the Governing Council of the ECB decided that the interest rate on the main refinancing operations and the interest rates on the marginal lending facility and the deposit facility will remain unchanged.

MEPs ask for more EU-wide cooperation on online gambling

The Internal Market Committee approved a resolution in which asks EU-wide cooperation to counter the black market and protect children and vulnerable consumers regarding online gambling. They also think EU Member States should be free to maintain their own rules on this

European public is more concerned about climate change than the economic situation according to a poll

Two Europeans in three see climate change as a very serious problem and almost 80% consider that taking action to combat it can boost the economy and jobs. The results of a special Eurobarometer survey published shows that the European public is more concerned about climate change than it was in 2009.

Committee of the Regions (CoR) President Mercedes Bresso opposed Commission plans to suspend all EU regional development funds for countries that breach European deficit rules. Elisabeth Morin-Chartier, responsible for the cohesion policy report at the European Parliament, expressed her concerns about a possible link between the allocation of funds to social projects and the respect for budget discipline required by the stability and growth pact.
