Commission's lobby register: it's time to sign up

The European Commission launched its online register of interest representatives on the 23rd June 2008. All interest representatives engaged in influencing the policy formulation and decision-making processes of the European institutions are invited to register. When registering, they will be asked to disclose some information to enhance the transparency of the relations between lobbies and the Commission.

Commission proposes strengthening European Judicial Network

The Commission has adopted a proposal for the review of the 2001 decision on the European Judicial Network in civil and commercial matters between the Member States. The purpose of this proposal is to endow the network with a new legal framework, a more effective organisational structure and greater means to enable it to play a lead role within the European judicial area as the essential vehicle for cooperation between all those involved in civil justice in future.

From education to work - a challenge

The transition from school to work has become very difficult for the majority of young people in Serbia and Ukraine, according to the results of the report "Transition from education to work" published by the ETF. Unemployment or other forms for joblessness tend to be high among young people in the two countries. Large groups of individuals cannot afford to be without an income due to limited coverage of public social welfare systems. Consequently, emigration and different forms of informal employment have become preferred or only choice for many. In Serbia, one out of three young Serbs spend more than two years to get their first job after leaving school, the report shows.

Budapest wins race for EIT seat

The headquarters of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) will be hosted by Budapest. A decision taken by the science ministers of all EU Member States on 18 June selected the Hungarian capital over four other bids. The Hungarian government welcomed the agreement and said it was a great success for the country.

Towards a European Charter on the Rights of Energy Consumers

MEPs adopted a report on "Towards a European Charter on the Rights of Energy Consumers" which underlines the potential added value of the Charter as an information tool collecting, consolidating the energy rights of consumers as already adopted in the existing EU legislation. MEPs call on Member States to invest as a priority in energy efficiency measures for low-income households, thereby addressing in a strategic manner both the problem of fuel poverty and the "20% by 2020" energy efficiency.

New collaboration agreement with CEA on nuclear science and technology

A new collaboration agreement between the European Atomic Energy Community, represented by the JRC Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), and the Centre à Énergie Atomique (CEA, FR) will significantly advance cooperative research in domains of common interest: high level nuclear waste minimization and management, safety of advanced reactor concepts and fuel cycles and issues in basic nuclear science.
