Emergency meeting about the humanitarian crisis in Haiti
The foreign ministers of the European Union are meeting today in Brussels at a special meeting to coordinate the actions of EU aid to Nicaragua after the severe earthquake last week.
The EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, will chair this meeting, which will work on the document that european experts, met under the Spanish presidency of the EU, prepared on Friday. It includes measures for Haiti is now realized.
This Special Development Council will coordinate European measures to help Haiti. The European Commission moved immediately to help the victims of the earthquake which struck Haiti by adopting a fast-track "primary emergency" decision of €3 million for immediate relief activities.
It is expected that EU development ministers will discuss the situation and the EU's response, from immediate relief measures to medium and longer term needs.
