Business on the final stage for Copenhagen Climate Council

Six months prior to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen, the World Business Summit on Climate Change will bring together in Copenhagen between May 24th and 25th, CEOs, government representatives, scientists and leading thinkers to put forward recommendations for the next global treaty on climate change.

The importance of the new climate change treaty can-not be overstated. Scientists around the world are alarmed at the current pace of change in the global ecosystem. Accelerating at an alarming speed, global climate change is the single biggest risk facing the world economy and the future of our planet.

Through workshops and debates, global leaders meeting at the World Business Summit will learn about and develop the latest low-carbon solutions as well as present the most advanced and innovative business strategies to combat climate change. The goal is to demonstrate how policy, coupled with innovative business models, can drive a sustainable transformation of the economy and stimulate job creation and low-carbon solutions.

The overriding theme of the Summit will be how to shape a new green economy, an issue which has been on focus for the Commission as one of the main elements for economic recovery and which has received support through cohesion policy.  This will be addressed from a variety of angles, including in specific sessions on how to:

  • Create robust global carbon markets
  • Finance clean energy
  • Boost energy efficiency
  • Promote investment in technology RDD&D
  • Underpin technology collaboration and solve IPR issues
  • Protect forests and develop sustainable land use
  • Manage and fund adaptation to the effects of climate change
  • Measure and report progress

The Summit will send a strong message to politicians that stresses the need to create a stable, global framework within which business can operate most effectively. Recommendations from the Summit will outline the elements needed to effectively boost investment, markets, innovation, and the development of technology.

The international business community will offer governments a new, global partnership: If governments agree to create the required enabling framework, business can deliver the solutions.

The results of the Summit will be presented to the Danish government, host of COP15, and to world leaders negotiating the terms of the next international climate treaty.
