MEPs want to set a date to start of accession talks with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
The resolution approved by MEPs at the Foreign Affairs Committee recommends to set a date for starting accession negotiations with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. It also stresses the need to press ahead with its integration into Europe. In another resolution that was also approved in the Foreign Affairs Committee, MEPs asked to the five EU Member States that have yet to recognise Kosovo's independence should now do so.
MEPs in the Foreign Affairs Committee at the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which they ask for setting a date to start accession talks with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The resolution stresses the need to press ahead with its integration into Europe and in particular to begin pre-screening its legislation for conformity with that of the EU. In 2009, the EU adopted a Regulation eliminating visas for Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia.
The name of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continues to block both its road to EU membership and the wider EU enlargement process. MEPs underline that good neighbourly relations are a key criterion for the EU enlargement process. However, the resolution points out MEPs concerns on issues such as that media ownership remains highly concentrated in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and also about the independence and impartiality of the State Commission for the Prevention of Corruption. MEPs are also concerned on the segregation of children of different ethnic groups within the education system.
The Foreign Affairs Committee also approved a resolution that recommend to the five EU Member States that have yet to recognise Kosovo's independence should do so, noting that 85 countries have already done likewise. The resolution reiterates how important it is for the EU to engage with Kosovo and considers this commitment vital for preserving stability and security in the EU's immediate neighbourhood. In fact, the Commission has already started a dialogue with Kosovo on visa free travel.
