MEPs call in Durban for a binding global agreement on climate change by 2015

The European Parliament delegation to the United Nations summit on climate change held in Durban, stressed that the constant blame game between the United States and China regarding climate change, is hindering the process to reach a global agreement. MEPs claimed in this Summit for the urgent setting of a roadmap that will lead to the signature of a binding global agreement.

European Parliament's delegation reaffirmed the strong commitment of the Chamber to the Second Kyoto Protocol, provided that environmental integrity is respected. Delegates of the Parliament present at the UN Summit on climate change in Durban, highlighted that the financial crisis should not mean an excuse for not paying due attention to environmental protection and combating climate change.

According to the delegates of the Parliament, one of the key elements of the Summit is to ensure the necessary funds through the Green Climate Fund for poor countries to undertake the necessary measures to mitigate climate risk. Increasing the efforts to achieve an economy based on low emissions, and setting even more ambitious goals than those in the European strategy for reducing greenhouse gases, is crucial in the point of view of delegates present in Durban.

MEPs also stressed the the positive impact of including a special marine levy in the United Nations draft, and highlighted that shipping and aviation should now assume their role in this scheme of climate protection.
