9 of May, Europe Day 2011: "Festival of Europe"

On 9th of May of 1950, Robert Schuman, French Foreign Minister gave a speech that marked the beginning of the road towards the EU. For this reason, on May 9 we celebrate Europe Day as well as the 61st anniversary of the birth of the European Coal and Steel Community. In order to celebrate this day, the European institutions open their doors to show their work to the citizens.

The European institutions also organize many activities which are not only in Brussels, also in Member States. Among these, a giant “euro-karaoke” at the doors of the European Parliament in Brussels. There will be as well concerts, dance performances, competitions, conferences, etc,.

In Brussels, where they concentrate most of the seats of the institutions, the buildings will be opened to the public on 7 May. This is the best opportunity to visit the Berlaymont - headquarters of the Commission – the European Parliament plenary or the great hall of the Council where they meet European leaders and ministers. The Committee of the Regions, visitors will be offered a taste of local food and drinks, as well as information about tourism, culture, education and investment opportunities. The European Economic and Social Committee will invite citizens to discover the energy sources of the future by facing the challenge of its explorer trail.
