Commission and EU presidency facilitate the mobility of young European workers

All the member states have agreed to promote a European programme to facilitate labor mobility of young people with the goal of halving youth unemployment by adapting Erasmus programme to the labour market.

The Spanish Minister for Equality, Bibiana Aido, and European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, Androulla Vassilou, presented the European initiative "Youth in movement" to facilitate the mobility of European youth during the EU Youth Conference held in the Spanish city of Jerez.

Commissioner Vassilou explained that "Youth in movement" initiative is being designed for its approval during the Spanish Presidency of the EU, and will be part of the new policies that will come into force after the adoption of the future European Strategy 2020.

This programme aims to get that a successful programme like Erasmus can be transferred into the work market, and to ensure that youth have a work experience in another European Union member state so as to improve its competitiveness.

The objective of the Spanish Presidency with this initiative is to incorporate the dimension of youth employment policies in all member states so as to contribute to lowering the high rates of youth unemployment, which is around 20% in the EU, according to data published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Communities. Minister Bibiana Aido will raise the conclusions adopted at the Youth Conference of the European Union Council of Ministers of Youth to be held in Brussels on 11 May.
