Novel H1N1 Influenza affects more than 20,000 Europeans
According to the latest report issued by the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and 20,382 are citizens of the EU and EFTA countries affected by H1N1 virus. In addition to these confirmed cases, there have been 35 deaths. England is the country with more infected: 11,159 confirmed cases.
The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention continues issueing reports detailing the progress of the global epidemic of influenza A. According to the last of its documents, 20,382 European citizens are affected by the N1H1 virus. More than half of those affected are in a single country: United Kingdom, which accumulates 11,159 positive cases of influenza A. Behind, but far from it, we find Germany (2,844 cases) and Spain (1,538).
The other side of the coin is Lithuania, where only 10 cases have been confirmed since the beginning of the pandemic, Latvia, with 12 positive and Luxembourg, with 19. At least 35 Europeans have died because of Influenza A.
However, all these data are partial. Since the flu crossed the Atlantic to come from Mexico to Europe, The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention has been reporting on the developments and confirmed cases in the EU every day. Last Friday, the CPCE announced it will stop issuing daily reports such as the number of confirmed and probable cases of influenza H1N1 is only a small proportion of the true number of cases.
Now, therefore, the CPCE produces a report with the total number of hospitalizations and deaths every week, and will continue using its traditional surveillance systems to track the progress of the novel H1N1 influenza outbreak. Meanwhile, Europe continues to invest its funds in the investigation of this virus, with studies like the recently funded by the FP7.
