State aid to Irish Broadcasting and Media

The European Commission has published is the Official Journal of the European Union (OJ),a decision to propose appropriate measures, which were subsequently accepted, for state aid to Ireland. The Decision was adopted on the 2nd of February 2008 will finance Radio Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) and Teilifís na Gaeilge (TG4) with 220 meros.

Under the Broadcasting Authority Act 1960 and Broadcasting Act 1001 the Irish state has an alotted 220 million euros in the way of a direct grant aimed at providing services of general economic interest within its Media area. State financing will go to Radio Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) and Teilifís na Gaeilge (TG4).

RTÉ is a Public Service Broadcaster, a non-profit making organisation owned by the Irish people. RTÉ is Ireland's cross-media leader, providing comprehensive and cost-effective free-to-air television, radio and online services, which are of the highest quality and are impartial, in accordance with RTÉ's statutory obligations.

Teilifís na Gaeilge (TG4) provides a high quality programming schedule in Irish and other languages. To serve the Irish language audience across all age groups and language ability by providing new and innovative programmes, primarily from the independent sector, to promote creativity and to celebrate Irish storytelling, sport, music, drama and culture.
