1. Public consultation launched on prevention and control of gastroenteritis outbreaks in schools and childcare facilities

    The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) launched a public consultation to the technical report “Prevention of norovirus infection in schools and childcare facilities”. The ECDC is seeking views from the scientific community and stakeholders on the prevention and control of gastroenteritis outbreaks in schools and child care facilities.

    The technical report “Prevention of norovirus infection in schools and childcare facilities” is under assessment through a public consultation launched by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). This report focuses on norovirus, which is one of the most common causes of childhood gastroenteritis and with epidemiological characteristics that promote a high rate of infectivity and transmission. In 2011, another study presented by the Commission found viruses in almost 40% of more than 1,400 bathing water samples collected in 9 European countries.

    In particular, the ECDC is seeking views from the scientific community and stakeholders in line with ECDC’s commitment to openness and transparency. This technical report synthesises current international guideline recommendations and reviews findings related to the prevention and control of gastroenteritis outbreaks in schools and child care facilities. The report also aims to contribute to identifying the key facts that can support message development for the implementation of health communication activities in child care settings.

    The contributions can be submitted by email. The European Centre of Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is an EU agency with aim to strengthen Europe's defences against infectious diseases. It is seated in Stockholm, Sweden and it was established in 2005.
