The EU and Canada have reached agreement on an equivalency in organics product

The review of the EU and Canada's rules for organic production and control systems have led to the conclusion that in both the rules governing production and controls of organic agricultural products are equivalent to those laid down in each other's legislation. The equivalency reached will facilitate and hence boost trade in agricultural organic products between the EU and Canada.

After long and intensive discussions between the European Commission and Canadian authorities, they have reached an agreement on an equivalency in organic products. Thus, Canada will be added to the list of recognised countries and Canada, on its side, it now recognises all EU organic products as equivalent to the Canadian Organic Products Regulation. From now on, the respective organic logos will be authorised to be used on each other's market.

EU air safety deal with Canada

Another agreement has been launched concerning Canada after the approval by the European Parliament of the EU air safety deal with this country. The agreement provides for mutual recognition of technical aviation and aircraft standards, which would eliminate the need for duplicate checks or certification procedures. It foresees joint inspections, investigations, exchange of aviation safety data and increased regulatory cooperation.

Although the agreement was signed in May 2009, under the Lisbon Treaty needed the Parliament's consent. This is expected to enhance aviation safety, reduce red tape and facilitate trade between the two parties. The agreement also enhances certainty as to the law in EU-Canada relations, by recognising the principles of the EU internal aviation market and the status of a "Community carrier".
