Two Italian journalists awarded with the European Health Journalism Prize 2010

The three winners of the 2nd European Health Journalism Prize were announced during a ceremony held in Brussels on 30 November 2010. This year two Italian journalists, Gianluca Ferraris and Ilaria Molinari, were jointly awarded with the first prize for their article “Stealing Hope” which addresses the issue about “healing clinics”.

With the two winners, Czech journalist, Lucie Hášová Truhelková, was awarded second place for the article on organ donation entitled "Love Dwells in the Kidney". A team of Danish journalists, Kasper Krogh, Morten Crone, Line Holm Nielsen and Jesper Woldenhof, writing in Berlingske Tidende, came third, for their article "The Great Failure" about an individual's quest to change the health system.

The winners of this year edition, Gianluca Ferraris and Ilaria Molinari, draw attention in their article  published in the Italian review Panorama, on the phenomenon of the "healing clinics" which offer expensive, but unproven, therapies to vulnerable patients suffering from chronic diseases.

With this prize, the Commission stresses the important role of the media in raising awareness on healthcare and patients' rights issues. This year edition of the European Health Prize, which was launched back in March, has seen a major increase in both the number of eligible articles and the number of journalists who participated. 438 journalists from all 27 Member States took part in this competition, 44% more than last year.

The 27 shortlisted finalists and the editors of the publications, were invited to Brussels to attend the award ceremony and to take part in a media seminar on the Europe for Patients initiatives which are together with the EU Health Prize for Journalists, funded by the EU Health Programme.
