EU studies educational support to children newly arrived immigrants
Directorate-General for Education and Culture has launched a tender to study on educational support for newly arrived migrant children in UE.
The Specific objective of the tender (B-Brussels: study on educational support for newly arrived migrant children) is to carry out a comparative study on educational support for newly arrived migrant children in EU Member States. The study aims to identify good practices implemented in the Member States so they can be proposed.
The European Commission has set up a maximum budget of 175,000 Euros and bids can be submitted until 27th September 2010.
This tender is framed in The programme in the field of lifelong learning which aims to foster interchange, cooperation and mobility between education and training systems in the UE.
Green Paper of July 3, 2008 is another measure that is concerned with education policy for children of immigrant origin. This Paper opens a public consultation on education policy applicable to these children.PISA data (2006) show that in the EU-15 countries at least 10% of the school population are immigrant or descendant from immigrant parents, and the ratio approaches a 15% in the fourth grade of primary education. In some countries, like Ireland, Spain and Italy, the percentage of school pupils born in another country has multiplied by three or four since 2000. The presence of significant numbers of immigrant students has important implications for educational systems. Schools must adapt to their presence and build their particular needs in the traditional focus on providing an equitable and high quality education.
On the other hand and about immigration, the European Union presented a Communication from the Commission to the European Parliament, the Council, the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions - Towards a Common Immigration Policy {SEC(2007) 1632} /* COM/2007/0780 final */ on December 5th, 2007 to advance the immigration policy of the European Union and to assume a new commitment in this field.
